An injured great bustard, thought to be possibly the heaviest flying bird in the world, had to be treated at Elazig’s Animal Hospital on Thursday, after it was found in the eastern Anatolian province of Tunceli at the beginning of the week.
On Monday locals reported seeing the bird near the village of Dorutay, from where it was immediately transported to the vet. The great bustard had suffered a fractured leg, so a cast had to be made for it.
This was the first time this particular species had been spotted in this region. The migratory great bustard has been classified as 'vulnerable', but can be found in Europe and Asia, as well as Russia and the UK, where it has been reintroduced. It has a wing span of up to 260 cm (8,5 foot) and weighs around 16kg (35lbs).
