Several thousand Ukrainians marched in Kiev on Tuesday to protest a new utility tariff hike. Leader of the Radical Party, Oleh Lyashko, called the increases to gas and utility prices under President Petro Poroshenko a 'tariff genocide against the Ukrainian people' drawing comparison with 'Holodomor, genocide' in the nineteen thirties.
Protesters marched from Shevchenko's Park to the Cabinet of Ministers and finally to Parliament, chanting as they went 'European prices - European salaries'. Protesters demanded the government reform salaries, establish a minimum wage and oppose tariff hikes. More than 100 National Guard policemen accompanied the march though no clashes were reported.
Ukraine has seen a twofold increase in hot water and central heating tariffs since July 1, 2016.
