Exclusive footage from Tuesday reveals tunnels which were formerly used by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants in a monastery in the liberated village of Karemlash, around 30km (18.6 miles) from Mosul.
Soldiers from the Iraqi army found that parts of the monastery had been used as hiding places when the village was under IS control. Footage also shows Father Paolo Thabit, a priest who escaped in 2014 and today was the first one to come back, planting a cross to commemorate his homecoming.
Karemlash is one of two Assyrian Christian villages to have been liberated from IS control in the past three days by the Iraqi army and the Nineveh Plan Protection Unit (NPU), an Assyrian Christian Militia, the other village being Qara Qosh. Karemlash has been under IS control since August 2014.
