King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch, died aged 88 in Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital on Thursday, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha announced.
Throughout the previous day, hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital to pray for the king on hearing news of his deteriorating health. Many in the crowd broke down in tears once the announcement of his death was made.
To announce the king's demise was Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha during a televised address to the nation. Chan-ocha informed the Thai people that the king's successor would be Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, adding that Thailand would hold a one-year period of mourning, reducing entertainment-related events and activities for one month.
