The former president of Brazil Dilma Rousseff gave a speech at a trade union rally in Montevideo on Friday, during her first overseas visit since Congress voted for her impeachment and removal from office.
The rally, which drew huge crowds from a number of organisations from the the General Union of Uruguayan Workers (PIT-CNT), was held to draw attention to unfair salary conditions and the effects of neoliberalism.
Speaking at the rally, Rousseff warned that, "the tree of democracy is being attacked" by "parasites who enter the institutions, who reduce the rights of people to demonstrate, of workers to defend their rights". She went to say that such rights are threatened, "in the name of neoliberalism" and were done "based primarly on financial interests."
Following the rally, Rousseff attended a ceremony at Montevideo town hall, where mayor Daniel Martinez awarded her with the keys of the city.
