Panama: Canal expansion project installs final lock gate

The last of 16 gates in the new locks of the Panama Canal was successfully installed, Tuesday, on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal expansion project, making the expansion around 90 per cent complete. The 4,232 tonne gate, 'Gate C', is 57.6 m (189 ft) wide, 10 m (33 ft) long and 33 m (108 ft) high and is located at the southern end of the new locks. The Panama Canal's system of locks is undergoing extensive upgrade to allow the canal to carry ships around triple the maximum size currently possible. The expanded Panama Canal is expected to be complete by April 2016.
