Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the UN Farhan Haq said "some 7,233 persons" comprise the migrant caravan in Mexio, with many headed towards the US, speaking from New York City on Monday.
"It is estimated that the caravan comprises some 7,233 persons, many of whom intend to continue the march north," said Haq of the migrants, many of whom are currently stranded on the border between Mexico and Guatemala.
The spokesperson stated that the secretary-general has "been in touch" with different leaders in an attempt to urge them to cooperate, in order to resolve the situation.
Haq added that both the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reinforced their capacity in the Mexican border towns of Ciudad Hidalgo and Tapachula, to provide "legal advice and humanitarian assistance to those who seek asylum."
The migrant caravan, mostly from Honduras, arrived on Mexico's southern border on Friday, fleeing poverty and violence. Trump has threatened to close the border between the US and Mexico.
