UK: Anti-Gitmo protesters demand release of British detainee Shaker Aamer

16.05.2015
Protesters gathered in London on Saturday to rally against the treatment of detainees in the US Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp. The group are calling for the release of British prisoner Shaker Aamer, who has been imprisoned at the detention centre for almost 14 years without receiving a trial or charges. One protester plans to stay in a makeshift Guantanomo cage for 14 hours, mimicking the conditions Aamer and his fellow prisoners currently undergo in the US detention centre located on Cuban soil. Aamer was seized while in Afghanistan and has been held in Guantanamo since 2002. While both the Bush and Obama administrations cleared Aamer for release, he remains in detention. While in Guantanamo, Aamer's lawyer Clive Stafford Smith reports that he has lost 40 percent of his body weight. The conditions of Guantanomo Bay have been heavily criticised throughout the world by those advocating for an end to the unjust and disrespectful treatment dished out at the detention centre. Detainees are not allowed contact with the outside world and are reliant on representation to express their grievances.
