United Nations special envoy for the Syria crisis, Staffan de Mistura, announced from the UN Geneva headquarters, Friday, that he expects the opposition delegation to arrive Sunday, saying "we are hearing indications in the right direction and we look forward to welcome them here."
Speaking to the press after holding talks, de Mistura said "I have good reasons to believe that they [the opposition] are actually considering this very seriously. And therefore to be in a position on probably Sunday to actually start the discussions with them in order to be able to proceed with the intra-Syrian talks. I was considering Monday as an important day to reassess the situation, but my feeling is, I am maybe wrong, that in fact their internal discussion is leaning towards accepting our suggestion."
De Mistura listed the points on the agenda for the talks, saying, firstly "governance, but we are talking about a governance which is all-inclusive,"secondly, a new constitution, not just what it is already. Thirdly, new elections under UN-supervision," reminding the press to allow time for the delegations to start the negotiations first.
The main goal of the intra-Syrian negotiations is to ultimately end the five-year-old conflict in Syria, with the initial implementation of a ceasefire, an increase in first aid to civilians and the establishment of a broad opposition against the so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).
