At least 39 refugees drowned, including several children, while some 75 were rescued from the water after the dinghy in which they were travelling towards the Greek island of Lesbos capsized and sank off north-western Turkish coast, near Ayvacik, Saturday.
Corpses were seen washed up on the beach along with lifejackets and people's belongings. Many of those who survived and were rescued from the sea were hospitalised after suffering from hypothermia. Emergency services provided them with blankets as soon as they reached the port.
According to UNHCR figures, over one million migrants arrived on European shores from the Mediterranean Sea in 2015, with southern Europe seeing the majority of arrivals. It is estimated that over 54,000 have taken the same option since 2016 began, with Syrians being the majority of them due to the armed conflict which is devastating the country and the presence of militant groups as the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
