Conflicting parties in Syria need "to adhere to what has been agreed” German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said during a press conference in Riga on Tuesday.
Speaking on the day following the cessation of hostilities in the country, Steinmeier admitted that at this point it is uncertain if the ceasefire will be upheld. However the German Foreign Minister added, that he expects after the “most difficult negotiations” between Russia and the United States, the building of bridges between the two nations, will be used “as orientation” by conflicting parties in Syria.
Steinmeier met with the Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius, and Estonian Deputy Minister for EU Affairs Matti Maasikas to discuss the security policy of the European Union. The German Foreign Minister stated that “the situation has objectively changed” in Eastern Europe, but that Germany has made “an essential contribution” to the improvement of security in NATO.
