SOT, Geng Shuang, MOFA spokesperson (Mandarin): "Increasing tariffs won't resolve anything. China will never yield to external pressure. We are determined and capable of safeguarding our legitimate rights and interests. As we said before, we hope the US could work together with China to meet each other halfway, settle each other's legitimate concerns on the basis of mutual respect and equality, and strive for a mutually beneficial and win-win agreement. This is in line with the interests of both sides and the expectation of the international community."

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Geng Shuang promised countermeasures against US recent tariff hike, speaking at a Ministry of Foreign Affairs press conference in Beijing on Monday.
"Increasing tariffs won't resolve anything. China will never yield to external pressure," said Geng Shuang, adding that "China will have to take countermeasures."
"Wait and see", said the spokesperson, not specifying which steps and when exactly are to be taken.
Beijing reacted to US President Donald Trump's decision to hike a tariff to 25% on $200 billion (€178 billion) worth of Chinese goods on May 10, as the trade war between the two countries has escalated.
