16.06.2015
Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa spoke to thousands of his supporters from the balcony of the presidential palace in Quito, Monday. Criticising the opposition, Correa said "one of their strategies is the generation of violence to try to bring down the government, delegitimize it and, if they can achieve it, make a coup d’Etat." Correa's first speech since returning from a trip around Europe, the rally was held after oppositional protests swept the nation over new bills which will increase taxes on inheritances and capital gain. The Wealth Redistribution Law will tax inheritances above $35,400 (€31,000) 2.5%, and 77.5% on inheritances above $849,600 (€753,000). Correa said "If it is proven that these laws affect the poorer, affect the middle classes, I will myself personally ask the National Assembly to remove the respective laws."
