Civilians who had managed to flee from rebel-held districts of Aleppo recounted how they had been cut off from food supplies and shot at when they attempted to leave, Monday.
Describing his escape, one man said that he managed to leave in a group, dodging militants who had opened fire on them, injuring several people including three of his nephews. Cut off from humanitarian and food supplies, another civilian said, "we were starving."
According to the Russian Centre for Reconciliation, the Syrian Armed Forces had liberated 12 eastern Aleppo districts comprising of over 40 percent of eastern Aleppo on Monday.
The Centre estimated that over 3000 civilians had left areas still held by the rebels and around 80,000 people were living in newly liberated areas of the eastern part of the city.
The 12 eastern Aleppo districts liberated included Jabal Badru, a main base for the Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) militant group and their allies, Sheikh Hader, Sakhour and Haydariya.
