EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said that sanctions imposed by the European Council against nine people under the new regime of restrictive measures against the use and proliferation of chemical weapons were made "on the basis of very strong legal basis," during a press conference in Brussels on Monday.
"You know that we started to discuss the opportunity to have a sanctions regime in place specific to the use of chemical weapons already in the previous months, so the decision today has come to somehow fill in the list that was already open for possibility. And that is part of our strong commitment and determination on contributing to the prevention of use of, not only chemical weapons, but weapons of mass destruction in general terms," Mogherini said.
The EU sanctions hit five Syrians and four Russians, including the Salisbury case suspects Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov.
Russian government spokesperson Dmitri Peskov reportedly said on Monday, that Petrov and Borishov have been "suspected without basis, there has been no proof so far."
