Hundreds of people gathered outside the W.O.R.D. Ministries Christian Center in Summerville, South Carolina on Saturday to pay their respects to Walter Scott, an African-American man who was shot in the back while running away from a white police officer on April 4. Scott's family and members of his local community gathered for the service. Charleston County Sheriff J. Al Cannon Jr. and other state officials including South Carolina Representative James Clyburn and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott also paid their respects. The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) released a police dashcam video, Thursday, showing the final moments before the fatal shooting of unarmed Walter Scott in North Charleston on April 4. The video shows Scott running away after being pulled over. The video starts with 33 year-old officer Michael Slager pulling over Scott for having a broken brake light. Slager then asks for Scott's license and registration following a brief conversation about car insurance. The officer then returns to his police car. A few moments after, Walter Scott can be seen opening his door. Slager tells him to get back inside his vehicle, and Scott does. Shortly after that, Scott opens his door once again and runs off. Slager gives chase and the two disappear beyond the range of the dashcam. Additionally, another passenger can be seen in Scott's car. The passenger was taken into custody after the incident, according to North Charleston Police. Earlier in the week, the New York Times published a video recording of the actual shooting, recorded by a third party. In that video, officer Slager can be seen shooting Scott eight times in his back while the man runs away. Neither the dashcam footage nor the third-party video could confirm claims made by Slager about Scott stealing his Taser during the incident, although the officer can be heard screaming 'Taser' several times in the dashcam footage.
