Mayor or Toronto John Tory and dozens of LGBT supporters and believers honoured the Orlando shooting victims at Toronto Unity Mosque, Saturday, during the traditional iftar meal for Ramadan.
Muslims, non-Muslims, LGBT activists and residents of Toronto came to pay their respects to the victims of the shooting at a nightclub Pulse, in Orlando, which took lives of 50 people and injured 53.
Human right activist and the mosque's representatives El-Farouk Khaki said that the shooting "shocked the consciousness of a lot of people" on the topics of homophobia, transphobia, racism, xenophobia, while giving rise to further anti-Muslim sentiment.
He termed the Iftar in the mosque "a hope of communities coming together and recognising that actually there is a lot of intersectionality between Muslim, queer, immigrant, Latino, indigenous, refugee communities".
Fifty people were killed and 53 injured in a shooting at the LGBT nightclub 'Pulse' in Orlando on Sunday. The shooting is the deadliest attack in the US since 9/11. Omar Siddiqui Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent living in Port St. Lucie, has been identified as the culprit. He was killed during the SWAT operation at the club.
