Thousands of demonstraters rallied on Parliament Square in London, Monday, to show their support for Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is facing a backlash from members of his own party following the results of the UK’s referendum to withdraw from the EU.
During the event, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell reassured the crowd that Corbyn would not be stepping down from his position. McDonnell said, "What we've seen in the last few days is a small number of MPs seeking to undermine the democratic decisions of the Labour Party members and the labour and trade union movement.” He went on to stress, “Let me make it absolutely clear: Jeremy Corbyn is not resigning.”
Speaking at the rally himself, Corbyn expressed concern that the UK’s recent ‘Brexit’ referendum had indicated a surge in anti-immigrant feeling within the country, sayinh "One of the horrible disfigurements of our society is racism, intolerance and violence that is often associated with it, and sadly this has increased over the last few days.”
