18.09.2015
More than 350 projectiles weighing around 5 tons (11,000 lb), used during World War II were destroyed near the Russian city of Voronezh on Friday. All the unexploded mines, artillery shells, grenades and other explosive devices were pilled in a hole in the ground before a controlled explosion destroyed all of them. Every year ammunition from WWII is found and subsequently destroy near Voronezh. During the WWII (known in Russia as the "Great Patriotic War") Voronezh was a region were fierce battles occurred between the Nazis and its allies and the Red Army. Until January 25, 1943, parts of the Second German Army and the Second Hungarian Army occupied Voronezh. On January 25, 1943, Voronezh was liberated after ten days of combat. During the war the city was almost completely ruined, with 92 percent of all buildings destroyed.
