Germany: Bailout's purpose is to "ensure" Greek economy will "thrive" – ECB's Draghi

The bailout agreement was made to "ensure that Greece will become a thriving economy," European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi said at a press conference in Frankfurt on Thursday. The Greek parliament has approved a series of austerity measures and tough reforms demanded by its lenders as part of a new bailout package worth €86 billion ($95 billion). Draghi said the country needed a strong programme regardless of the fact that critics have called the creditor's demands 'blackmail' and condemned the new bailout plan, which includes pension reforms and other austerity measures. The Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras explained his reasons for backing the austerity measures in parliament on Thursday saying he had "responsibility towards the working classes, towards an exhausted and pillaged society" to not lead them into an "even worse position than the one they are already in." In total, a majority of 229 Greek MPs voted 'Yes' to the reforms, 64 voted 'No' while six MPs abstained.
