The modern shredder machine's inspiration can be traced back to a 19th-century pasta machine in Sicily, mechanized by Cesare Spadaccini under Ferdinand II. In 1935 Germany, Adolf Eichinger adapted a pasta machine to shred anti-Nazi pamphlets after a neighbor threatened to report him, leading to the development of commercial shredders. During World War II, the "White Rose" resistance group similarly used such methods to destroy anti-government leaflets, underscoring the high risks involved. The critical need for secure document destruction was highlighted during the 1979 US Embassy hostage crisis in Iran, where painstakingly shredded documents were later reconstructed. This event prompted advancements in shredding technology to prevent information recovery, with modern innovations now extending to digital media.
