One of Russia’s most highly regarded military academies, the famed Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School, has taken the unusual step of making its cadets speak English in training, with students conducting drills exclusively in the Anglo-Saxon tongue, Wednesday.
An instructor at the Airborne Command School, Vladimir Sevastyanov, explained that such exercises are essential to interact with foreign forces. The move came due to “a lot of international competitions where they [cadets] take part in a collective combat exercises with foreign military forces”. So now “officers of the future are taught English to understand their foreign colleagues.”
One paratrooper, Alexander Sevastyanov, said the platoon does “an activity twice a week in English. So we may carry out of our missions more professionally.”
The Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School was first established in 1918 and started training paratroopers in 1959.
