Drone footage provided a bird's-eye view, Friday, of an underground village complex in Sanmenxia, consisting of man-made caves which are inhabited to this day.
Residents began living in this manner hundreds of years ago because of the climate and the unique rock in Sanmenxia which lends itself to this type of construction. The cave homes are warm in winter and cool in summer.
Visitors can access a courtyard from an above-ground entrance via a passageway. The courtyard is about six metres (19.70 feet) below the ground, with most of the cave homes about eight metres (26.35 feet) underground.
The village was included in a list of Chinese traditional villages two years ago and is protected by the local government. It attracts tourists from all over the world.
