Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn railed at racism during a rally for thousands of BAME (British. Black, Asian, and minority ethnic) Labour supporters in London's Highbury Fields, Monday evening, hitting out at those "indulging in an orgy of xenophobia and racism."
Speaking to a crowd of an estimated 3,000, Corbyn hit out at the increase in racist attacks and xenophobia in the UK following June's Brexit vote, reaffirming that his Labour Party "will not tolerate any form of antisemitism, any form of Islamophobia, any form of racism whatsoever within our society."
He went on to point out different levels of institutional racism in the UK, stating that "black youngsters should be getting the same chances and advantages as everybody else." The Labour leader also stressed the importance of fighting against historical white-washing, refusing to laud the House of Commons exclusively for abolishing slavery, but the "heroic actions taken by people who were no longer prepared to live under slavery, that forced the owners and the whole system to stand up against it."
Corbyn continues to amass thousands of supporters at his campaign rallies as the Leader of the Opposition prepares for September's Labour leadership election. Corbyn reportedly enjoys a strong following among party grassroots, tipping him as the favourite against his sole challenger for the leadership, MP Owen Smith.
September's election, which comes less than a year after Corbyn's landslide victory amongst Labour Party members in September 2015, was called in the wake of a period of failed internal negotiations within the Labour Party. Labour's national executive committee (NEC), with many of its representatives considered to be at odds with Corbyn's policies, have since banned some 130,000 new Labour members, largely considered to be pro-Corbyn, from taking part in the vote.
Supporters of the Labour leader have heavily criticised what they consider to be a smear-campaign against Corbyn, allegedly launched by members of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP), representatives of the NEC, and several UK media outlets following his election as party leader last year.
