The Geneva peace talks for Syria will be relaunched in August following a series of negotiations between Russian and US diplomats in Moscow, announced UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura during a press conference in Berlin, Friday.
Speaking at a joint press conference alongside German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Mistura praised the meeting saying important measures have been taken: "there has been an important series of meetings in Moscow between John Kerry - Secretary Kerry - and the top Russian Federation leadership. Those talks were intensive - lasted two days - and from what we understand they came up with some type of understanding and some steps to be taken."
Steinmeier also commented on Syria and the Ukraine, warning that without a proper political process a sustainable ceasefire could not be achieved in the war-torn countries: "in Syria [...] we can see that the security situation is directly connected to the political process. In other words, we will probably not be able to achieve a sustainable ceasefire if we cannot achieve progress in the political process."
The main goals of the Intra-Syria Talks have been to ultimately end the five-year-old conflict in Syria, with the initial implementation of a ceasefire, an increase in first aid to civilians and the establishment of a broad opposition against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
