Speaking in New York on Friday, Russian ambassador to the United Nations Vitali Churkin said that "there is a need to consolidate our efforts with the Americans", rather than exchange mutual accusations following the Syria talks in Geneva which were suspended until February 25.
"Our Western colleagues, especially Americans strongly critised our actions," he said, adding that "there was a heaty debate between us during the meeting." Hovewer, both Russia and US maintain contact on various issues including cooperating on humanitarian assistance in Syria. According to Churkin, UN nonprofit organisation World Food Programme (WFP) is interested in providing humanitarian aid to Syrian areas occupied by the so-called Islamic State (former ISIS/ISIL, IS) militants.
On Wednesday, United Nations and Arab League Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura announced from the UN Geneva headquarters that the Syrian peace talks will be postponed until February 25 because there is "more work to be done." "The UN cannot allow simple procedural matters to actually become more important than the result for the humanitarian situation of the Syrian people," de Mistura said, commenting about why the talks had been postponed.
