Bahrain: Clashes continue in Nuwaidrat on ‘Arab Spring’ anniversary

14.02.2016
Anti-government protesters continued to clash with riot police in the village of Nuwaidrat close to Sitra on Sunday, on the fifth anniversary of the so-called Bahraini revolution.
The activists threw stones and Molotov cocktails at military vehicles, while the security forces responded by firing teargas.
Demonstrations had been called by Shia and pro-democratic forces throughout the island kingdom of Bahrain on Saturday and Sunday as part of a day of "civil disobedience against the regime".
The recent demonstrations in Bahrain are a continuation of the revolt against what protesters see as an autocratic government, the first bouts of which broke out 2011 in tandem with protests raging across the Arab World at the time.
The protests, mainly organized by the country's Shia community, were shut down by Bahraini authorities alongside troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Dozens of protesters deaths were reported, with allegations of that many detainees were tortured.
