Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-se, on the sidelines of the 52nd Munich Security Conference (MSC) on Friday to discuss the ongoing Syrian conflict and the situation in the Middle East.
Yun Byung-se took the opportunity to congratulate Lavrov on his “leadership that has enabled this result on cessation of hostilities in Syria."
Lavrov meanwhile spoke of the importance of “military-to-military contacts between Russia and the US-led coalition,” adding that Russia has pushed for this course of action since the beginning of its military involvement in Syria. “Unfortunately, the US has been avoiding this military-to-military cooperation, except deconfliction procedures,” Russia's top diplomat stated.
“Now I believe they have understood that to move forward with the settlement of the crisis in Syria, you can no longer avoid the contacts between the military; and this was endorsed in the International Syria Support Group yesterday," he added.
The 52nd Munich Security Conference kicked off at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in central Munich on Friday and runs until Sunday, February 14. Up to 600 international senior policymakers, including 30 heads of state and government, and 70 foreign and defence ministers are expected to attend. The refugee crisis, the conflict in Syria and the ability of the European Union to guarantee security are expected to top the agenda at this year's conference.
