SCRIPT
Leonardo Urena, a pumpkin hobbyist from Napa, California, snatched the first prize at the 46th annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, in Half Moon Bay on Monday, winning $15,000 (€13,602). Urena set a record for the state's largest pumpkin, which weighed some 2,175 lbs (986 kg).
The 51-year-old man, who reportedly took up the hobby in 2000, said that "this is one of the best weigh-offs, I think, in the world."
"Everybody wants to win Half Moon Bay; when we win Half Moon Bay, we feel proud," said Urena, adding that "winning Half Moon Bay is like winning the Kentucky Derby."
The weigh-off comes ahead of this weekend's Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival, where Urena's pumpkin will be on display.
