Hundreds of locals rushed to malls in Brasilia, despite long queues and coronavirus fears, on Wednesday after governor Rodrigo Rollemberg passed an act to open shops and malls in Brazil's capital.
Despite Brazil reporting the highest coronavirus death toll in the whole world on Tuesday for the fifth straight day, with 1,039 deaths in one day, locals flocked for a chance of some retail therapy.
Footage shows excited shoppers having their temperatures checked while queuing at safe distances outside the mall before entering.
"Actually I came to know how it is going, if it really is safe to come, if we really could get in, if it would be crowded, but it is very calm," stated local shopper Adriana de Oliveira. "It [the situation] is very calm. There is sanitation in the entrance, there is space, everybody is respecting it," she went on to say.
Brazil has reported over 414,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the outbreak began, with 25,697 people having died with the disease as of Thursday according to Johns Hopkins University.
