Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova spoke in Moscow on Thursday, where she criticised the “restrained reaction” of certain elements of the international community to the liberation of Palmyra by the Syrian Arab Army.
Discussing the lack of response from "some influential members" of the international community, Zakharova said, “we see a colossal geopolitical game. All of this surprised and disappointed us and, unfortunately, it demonstrates that there is a whole abyss between declared goals and real intentions.”
The ancient site located adjacent to Palmyra proper earned the south-central Syrian city the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. During her statement, Zakharova also confirmed that Russia would assist the Syrian government in the mine clearance operation and restoration of Palmyra’s historic sites.
