24.10.2015
Shia Muslims gathered in Munich, Saturday, before marching through its to mark the day of Ashura and mourn the martyrdom and death of the third Imam of Shia Muslims, Husayn ibn Ali. For Shias, Ashura is not a festival but an occasion of mourning and grief, while Sunni Muslims view it as a victory of Moses, given to him by god. The festival takes place on the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic Hijri calendar, commemorating the Imam along with his family and companions, who fell in the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram, 61 AH (10 October 680 AD). Ashura has a significant symbolism against lies, domination and autocracy. The march was organised by Ahlul Bayt Kulturverein.
