Arianespace’s Vega rocket successfully launched the Sentinel-2A satellite from launch pad ELA-1 at Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou at 01:52 GMT on Tuesday. The Sentinel-2A is designed to take picture of the earth’s surface, providing extra data on deforestation, agriculture, other environmental matters and land movements. The main goal is to use the information in harvest predictions, reducing market speculation and stabilizing the world food market. The spacecraft is part of a series of satellites the European Space Agency is planning to launch over the coming years. Sentinel-2b will follow its predecessor in roughly a year.
