Cuban-American residents in Miami celebrated following the death of former Cuban president Fidel Castro, Saturday, after the leader of the Communist revolution passed away at the age of 90 in Havana on Friday.
A global revolutionary icon, Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz served as leader of Cuba's Marxist-Leninist state following his key role in the Cuban revolution, governing as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008.
Born in 1926 in Biran on his father's farm, Fidel entered student politics in 1940 and was an active participant in leftist protests. He remained in the spotlight of political developments for the second half of the 20th century until the beginning of the 21st century.
In 2008, he handed the reins of power over to his younger brother Raul and slowly withdrew from Cuba's political scene. Labelled as the world's last Cold War leader, Castro survived a turbulent century, geopolitical tensions and dozens of US assassination attempts against him.
