24.06.2016
Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon stated that a new Scottish independence referendum was now "on the table" following the Brexit vote. Sturgeon was speaking at a press conference on the EU referendum results at the First Minister's official residence in Edinburgh, Friday.
Sturgeon argued that Scotland's right to a new referendum on independence from the UK is based on the Scottish people's determination and willingness to remain in the EU, an issue that, according to her, played a major role in the defeat of the 2014 independence referendum
The First Minister also announced that, over the weekend, EU institutions and EU member states would be informed of Scotland's willingness to remain in the European Union. She stated that ways to achieve this would also be discussed.
Sturgeon went on to reassure citizens of other European countries living in Scotland, that they "remain welcome here, Scotland is your home and your contribution is valued."
