Amanda Knox, an American who spent nearly four years in an Italian prison after being accused of the murder of her roommate, broke down in tears on stage on Sunday, during her first visit to Italy since her 2011 acquittal. She took part in a debate entitled ‘Trial by Media’ at the Criminal Justice Festival in Modena.
"On November 1, 2007 a thief named Rudy Guede entered my apartment and raped and killed my roommate Meredith," she said. "His DNA was detected on the body and throughout the scene and the crime."
Nevertheless, Knox was seen as guilty until proven innocent, she said.
"The lawyers told [my father] that my trial would probably take years. He started to cry. It was then that I realised how serious the situation was. Because I've never seen my father cry in my entire life," Knox said, as she broke down in tears.
Knox and her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito were accused and convicted of the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, in high-profile prolonged legal proceedings. They have since both been acquitted but Knox has since remained in the public eye as the subject of multiple documentaries.
