Scores of activists rallied outside the UK headquarters of aerospace manufacturer Thales, in Crawley on Friday, to protest against the company's partnership with Israel's Elbit Systems to develop a drone, which demonstrators claim is based on an unmanned aerial device used by Israel in its conflict with Palestine. Thales has reportedly denied the claims the jointly developed 'Watchkeeper' drone is developed along the lines of weapons systems used by Israel.
The activists gathered to protest against Thales and Elbit's joint development of the surveillance drone, which is produced through a joint venture dubbed UAV Tactical Systems (UTACS) Ltd..
Pro-Palestine groups and activists accuse Thales of profiting from the conflict between Israel and Palestine through the partnership. The 'Sussex Stop Arming Israel' group writes that the Watchkeeper drone is "modelled on" Elbit's 'Hermes 450,' a UAV that has been used in action by the Israeli military.
The Watchkeeper is being developed under a contract awarded by the UK's Ministry of Defence.
