Kurdish Peshmerga forces were seen combing out the area around Bashiqa in the north and west of Mosul, Friday.
Speaking on the operation, Peshmerga forces spokesperson, Dean Halgurd Ismail, said: "We are now combing out the area with the help of engineering forces, as well as villages. The Peshmerga forces are searching for bombers or militants of Daesh [IS]."
He continued, "the coalition forces have not been able to play a good role in the bombing of terrorists so we have a lot of dead and wounded."
Earlier on Friday, with the active support of the Iraqi Army troops the Pershmerga forces entered the Narvan district of the Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) held city.
Last Sunday Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the start of the military operation to liberate Iraq's second largest city Mosul from the IS. The militants captured Mosul in 2014 and the offensive is now spearheaded by the Iraqi army and Kurdish militia, supported by the coalition led by the United States.
