Plastic surgeon Guo Shuzhong, from a hospital in Xi'an, conducted a successful operation on Wednesday, which allows an ear to be transplanted onto a patient's arm.
His patient, Mr. Ji, lost his ear in the traffic accident and felt 'incomplete'. Due to the tree-step operation, he could be able to hear with an artificial one, if it successfully assimilates onto his arm.
The ear is made out of the patient's rib cartilage and then planted on his right arm. The grown ear could be re-attached to his head using vascular anastomosis techniques.
According to the doctor’s prognosis, it might take up to 4 months.
Guo Shuzhong told the journalists that he used the technique of another doctor, Yang Guo Fan, who planned to conduct a similar operation, but with another organ. He called his method creative and said that, unlike all the other doctors who had attempted to execute an operation and failed, his case was successful.
