Belgium: European steel workers protest cheap Chinese imports

15.02.2016
Thousands of European steel workers took to the streets of Brussels to protest what they see as the "dumping" of cheap Chinese imports on the EU market, Monday. Industry workers gathered from across the European Union to protest trading conditions that they say damage EU-based manufacturers; and called on the European Commission to take action.
The march, which surrounded the European Commission among other EU institutions, demanded that the EU protect the industry against external competitors. European steel workers accuse China of using illegal export subsidies and selling products below their real production cost. They argue that these practices pose a threat to steel industry-related jobs within the EU.
There are around 330,000 people who work in the EU’s steel sector. Industry officials say that, alongside these workers, a struggling European steel industry would affect thousands more jobs, in sectors such as ceramics, glass and energy.
