Some 10,000 people gathered at Milan’s Piazza del Duomo on Sunday to demand that the government approves legislation on same-sex civil unions.
People peacefully gathered on the square with LGBT flags, placards and banners. No incidents have been reported.
The bill puts forward proposals for a union would give homosexual couples many of the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts under Italian law; these rights include taking on a partner's name and, in some cases, the inheritance of a partner's residual pension.
The oppositional party Five Star Movement M5S prevented the vote on the bill happening this week and it was postponed as a result. Opponents of the bill in the Italian Senate are aiming not to include adoption into the legislation. The second chamber of Senate will continue the discussion on Wednesday.
Opinion polls indicate that the majority of Italians agree with gay civil partnership, although most Italians would not like to extend adoption rights to same sex couples.
Earlier on Sunday, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called for a coalition deal and a confidence vote on the bill in an address to his Democratic Party (PD).
