Russian President Vladimir Putin appointed Maksim Oreshkin as the new Minister of Economic Development in Moscow on Wednesday, replacing former minister Alexey Ulyukaev who is currently under house arrest on corruption charges.
Putin called the newly-appointed minister an "educated man and a mature professional" and wished him good luck in his role.
Speaking on the current Russian economic situation, Oreshin said that "the worst is behind us but the economic growth rate is still insufficient." He continued by stressing that "the main task for the upcoming year will be to prepare key measures that would remove structural obstacles to the growth of the Russian economy and allow it to move forward."
Ulyukayev was arrested on Monday, November 14, by officers from the Investigative Committee on suspicion that he had accepted a bribe of $2 million (€1,863,559). According to investigators, he received the money after his ministry had approved a deal on Rosneft's takeover of the major regional oil company Bashneft.
