Yanis Varoufakis, Greek Finance Minister (Greek): "The viability of the programme. I have to leave, you have to let me leave" Journalist (Greek): "Is the referendum taking place?" Yanis Varoufakis, Greek Finance Minister (Greek): "Of course it will take place. The prime minister made a speech, what more do you want me to say? I have to leave. Bye." Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis declared his confidence that his government will go through with the referendum on July 5, after he was mobbed by reporters outside the Finance Ministry in Athens, Wednesday. The Greek people will hold a referendum on July 5 to decide whether to accept the austerity measures imposed by the so-called "troika" (IMF, ECB, EC). The Greek government closed the country's banks on Monday, as well as imposing limits on withdrawals until July 6. A 'No' vote by the Greek people in the referendum would reject new austerity measures that are demanded by Greece's creditors, while a 'Yes' would accept the institutions' conditions for a new Greek bailout package.
