SOT, Josh Earnest, White House Press Secretary (English): "Look, the president's views haven't changed. He stands by what he said on the campaign trail. He had an opportunity to make his argument. He made that argument vigorously. He made that argument in states all across the country. But the American people decided. The election is over. The president didn't get to choose his successor; the American people did. And they've chosen President-Elect Trump. And President Obama is determined to preside over a transition that gives the incoming president the opportunity to get a running start."
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest spoke about Barack Obama's stance towards the new President-Elect Donald Trump in a press briefing, Washington D.C., Thursday, following their first meeting earlier in the day.
Earnest noted that "the president's views haven't changed" after a journalist pointed out that earlier in the week, Obama called Trump "temperamentally unfit to be Commander-in-Chief". The White House spokesperson said that Obama "stands by what he said on the campaign trail," noting however that "the president didn't get to choose his successor; the American people did" and that "President Obama is determined to preside over a transition that gives the incoming president the opportunity to get a running start."
Earlier in the day, Obama met with Trump at the White House, where he vowed that his outgoing administration will endeavour to help Trump succeed, saying, "If you succeed, then the country succeeds."
Trump declared victory in the early hours of Wednesday morning, after his Democrat rival Hillary Clinton called him to concede defeat following a bitterly fought election battle. Trump beat Clinton in a surprise landslide victory, garnering 278 of the Electoral College votes, while the Democratic candidate received 218.
