14.07.2016
Former Croatian-Serb wartime leader Goran Hadzic was buried in Novi Sad, Thursday, two days after he passed away in the hospital from a battle with a brain tumour.
Hadzic was a president of Republic of Srpska Krajina, a Serb-controlled part of Croatia during the civil war of the 1990s. In 2011, Hadzic faced an ICTY trial, which accused him of crimes against humanity and violation of laws during the war. In 2015, after Hadzic was diagnosed with a brain tumour, the tribunal released him for medical treatment. However, the ICTY decided to halt the trial indefinitely given his medical condition.
At the funeral ceremony, a friend of Hadzic’s spoke of his legacy, "At the time of the breakup of Yugoslavia, many said that he [Hadzic] wasn't up to the task, but he would always philosophically say that at the time he was the bravest among the smartest and smartest among the bravest."
Hadzic was the last Serbian fugitive to have been sent to The Hague. His case was one of three remaining cases under way at the ICTY. Hadzic was also the seventh defendant who passed away before the verdict was delivered.
