Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio spoke at a press briefing for the NYPD, in New York City, on Monday, where he discussed the developments in the an investigation into the shooting of a Muslim Cleric Imam Maulama Alauddin Akonjee and his associate Thara Uddinin in Queens on Saturday.
De Blasio offered his condolences to New York's Muslim population, acknowledging that there was currently "a lot of fear" in the faith community. He said, "It is a very rare thing to see a cleric killed and members of the Muslim community have been on edge because of the atmosphere already that existed in this country, particularly over the last few months in our national debate."
NYPD chief of detective Robert Boyce also used the press conference to update the media on the developments in the case and the recent arrest of a suspect. The man who has been arrested was later named as Oscar Morel, a 35 year old man from Brooklyn, who, Boyce said, is under investigation for two separate cases, a hit and run that occurred on Sunday evening, as well as the shooting of Akonjee and Uddinin. During their investigations, the detectives made a connection between the two incidents, leading to Morel's eventual arrest.
Boyce reported, "He was placed under arrest without any further incident and brought back to the precinct for more debriefing. We found the witness, and the witness picked that individual out of a photo array for doing that hit and run. So we are back, we are looking at him for both crimes, for the homicide and that."
