Pro-Kurdish supporters marched on the streets of Stockholm, Tuesday, to honour the Kurdish fighters and units (YPG, YPJ, PYD) who fought in the battle for Kobane in 2014.
Protesters carried flags and chanted slogans denouncing the self-proclaimed Islamic State and celebrating the breaking of the siege of Kobane.
One protester claimed, "It's very important. It's important for several reasons. The most obvious one is to celebrate the victory over Daesh, ISIS, in Kobane a year ago. And what that victory symbolises: a struggle of ideas, a struggle of principles. Where as I see it ISIS and Erdogan in Turkey represent totalitarian, fascist governments whilst the people of Rojava and Bakur, with the Kurds on the frontlines, represent a libertarian, gender-liberated and truly democratic society."
The participants were not permitted to carry items referencing the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and only a limited number of pictures showing its leader, Abdullah Ocalan, were allowed at the demo. The PKK is considered a terrorist organisation by the US, the EU and Turkey.
