Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton spoke to supporters at a Chicago rally, Wednesday, alongside the mother of Sandra Bland, a black woman who died while in police custody.
Clinton attempted to appeal to black voters by saying that her "core emphasis and commitment" was to knock down the "barriers that hold back African-Americans." She went on to state that "African Americans are nearly three times as likely as whites to be denied of mortgage."
While referring to Sandra Bland's mother, she stated that "we owe it to them to reform police practices to make sure that no other young woman like Sandra Bland is ever pulled out of a car for no good reason."
Sandra Bland was found dead on July 13 in what was originally ruled as a suicide. She was found hanging in her jail three days after she was arrested over a minor traffic incident. Critics have speculated that she died at the hands of the police.
While courting the so called 'black-vote' along the campaign trail, critics have focused on Clinton's husband and public supporter, erstwhile president Bill Clinton, hitting out at the effects of his crime policies on the African-American community. Under the 42nd president's initiatives, the US' inmate population grew from around 1.3 million to 2 million. By the end of Clinton's tenure, African Americans made up 80 to 90 percent of all drug offenders sent to prison, despite white citizens in the US being no more likely to consume or sell illegal drugs than blacks.
The latest polls show Hilary Clinton as neck-and-neck with Bernie Sanders in Nevada, while she is leading by far in South Carolina. Some polls, suggest that she leads Bernie Sanders by as much as 60 percent among African Americans.
