Estonia: Anti-migrant protesters demand referendum
6
18.07.2015
Up to 500 people staged a demonstration at Freedom Square in Tallinn against immigration, Saturday, after the government said Estonia may accept around 150 refugees. The protest was set up on the steps leading up to the Freedom Monument, where a stage set up holding a banner reading: "We demand a referendum." Protesters were waving numerous Estonian flags, along with the conservative People's Party and Party of National Unity flags. The EU is trying to distribute migrants and refugees entering the continent with a quota system among member states, however, it is facing resistance. The refugees come predominantly from Muslim majority countries, leading to a rise in xenophobic and Islamophobic actions in some conservative sections of civil society.
