Iraqi forces continued to progress through the city of Fallujah, Tuesday, conducting street battles with the few remaining fighters of the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) still present in the city.
The military forces of the Iraqi government initially launched the operation to retake the IS-held city of Fallujah on May 23, following an announcement by the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi.
Thousands of civilians who were trapped in the city are now fleeing following the advance from the Iraqi army. A further 30,000 people have reportedly fled the city in recent days, causing humanitarian aid agencies outside of the city to be inundated with cases. Fallujah, about 40 miles (78 km) west of Baghdad, was the first Iraqi city to be taken by IS in January 2014.
